Outdoor Play as a Vehicle to Support Children’s Learning

Outdoor play is about the experience of being outside and maximizing the potential of how the outdoor environment supports children in their play and learning. By looking at conceptual frameworks such as Bloom’s Taxonomy, early learning professionals can compare and contrast thinking processes and develop ways to support children in engaging in experiences that support the higher functioning of the brain. Accepting that it is not about what children know but what they think, early learning teachers encourage children to be creative and critical thinkers in their outdoor play. Adults support children in their knowledge acquisition and skill development while supporting them in learning about opportunities and safety in their outdoor experiences.
