02-Why Outdoor Play is the Hallmark for Children’s Development

This module examines how outdoor play is related to all aspects of children’s development, with a particular emphasis on self-regulation and executive functioning skills. An introduction to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Canadian Positon Statement on Active Outdoor Play will be discussed.

Course Description

In this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe how outdoor play benefits children’s development.
  2. Examine the relationship among outdoor play, self-regulation and executive functioning skills.
  3. Explain how Canada’s Position Statement on Active Play and the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child guide early learning programming.
  4. Explain the role and types of strategies that early learning teachers may use to promote outdoor play that supports children’s health, wellness and development.
  5. Describe why outdoor play is the hallmark for children’s development.
