05-The Role of Curiosity in Outdoor Play

This module provides an overview of the complexity of curiosity to children’s desire to explore and engage in outdoor play. An introduction to the types of curiosity, environmental conditions, materials and options for exploration are examined. The role of the adult in creating environments that spark and intrigue children’s curiosity are highlighted.

Course Description

In this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Define what is meant by curiosity, the levels of curiosity and the cycle of curiosity.
  2. Explain four types of curiosity.
  3. Describe the link between children’s curiosity and the role of early learning teacher in developing the disposition to support curiosity.
  4. Examine types of strategies that early learning teachers use in the outdoor environment to enhance children’s curiosity with materials and spaces.
