12 -Children’s Outdoor Play and Environmental Sustainability

In this module, participants will explore the relationship of children’s outdoor play experiences and environmental sustainability. Environmental sustainability encompasses early learning professionals considering environments, social, economic and cultural components to children’s experiences. Participants will consider how the values and approaches that adults exhibit influence children in becoming environmental stewards.

In this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Discuss the importance of sustainable development in early learning programs and how Indigenous teachings about the environment support all children in developing knowledge and environmental stewardship.
  2. Describe ways in which sustainability pillars can be embedded in early learning outdoor play programming.
  3. Explain how outdoor play and culture intersect with environmental sustainability.
  4. Analyze how environmental programming in early learning programs relates to the roles of early learning teachers and environmental pedagogy.
  5. Outline strategies that early learning teachers may use to enhance environmental sustainability practices.
